Art School - Is it worth it?

Posted by TainoWarrior Mar. 21, 2008 @ 2:50 AM EDT

The industry grows larger and larger every year, especially the video game industry and with it a higher demand for artist followed by a spawning of so called art schools. I guess what I am trying to figure out is when was it inculcated into the heads of aspiring artist that you need a Bachelors Degree or Associates Degree to draw or do anything dealing with art professionally. C'mon this isn't freaking rocket science we are talking about here, its art!

Now I am not saying all art schools are worthless, just the ones that end or begin with institute. A lot of the established art schools that have been around for decades are worth burning a hole in your pocket. But the point I am trying to make is that a degree is not necessary, patients, determination and a passion for what you do is. In my opinion take that money you were going to spend on a so called art education and go some where like the students art league, take a couple of classes, hustle, practice and make a name for yourself. Take the time and study, practice, want to learn 3d pick up a book and download bittorrent. Shit since you'll be saving a crap load of money buy the software and books yourself and begin your journey to becoming a professional artist.

But Like I said before this is my opinion. I really would like to know what other people think?
